Australian Christian Literature Society - Incorporated as a special unit of SPCK-Australia - 2001

ACLS was formed in 1972 on the initiative of Bishop Alfred Stanway,to provide competent professional consultancy to Christian literature work in developing countries, based on the skills which he and Revd Kevin Engel had developed in Africa.


SPCK-Australia administers three ACLS awards:
Australian Christian Book of the Year Award
Australian Theological Writer's Award
Young Christian Writer of the Year Award

 

Previous Years' Awards

Australian Christian Book of the Year

Awarded annually for original books written by Australians and published by an Australian publisher. The Christian Book of the Year carries a prize of $2,500 for the author, and a framed certificate for author and publisher. Supplementary awards may be made.

  • Entries may be submitted at any time until 31st March for titles published between 1st April of the previous year and 31st March of the current year.
  • There is no limit to the number of titles which a publisher may submit.
  • Entries must be accompanied by a fee of $50 per title, with four copies of each title entered.
Entries are read and judged by a panel selected by the Council of SPCKA with an eye to:
  1. the original nature of the work
  2. the literary style, including suitability for the target audience
  3. the overall design, layout, cover, text and illustrations
  4. the contribution that the book makes to Christian writing for the Australian situation and in the Australian market.


If in the opinion of the judges no entry meets the standards expected, no award is made. A short-list is announced during July and Awards are usually announced and presented in August.

WINNER DETAILS FOR 2008

Australian Theological Writer's Award

Open to any book of a principally theological nature written by an Australian citizen normally resident in Australia, and published in any country. The award carries a prize of $2,500 for the author, and a framed certificate for author and publisher. Supplementary awards may be made.

Entries may be submitted at any time until 31st March for titles published between 1st April of the previous year and 31st March of the current year.

Entries are read and judged by a panel selected by the Council of SPCKA with an eye to:
  1. the original nature of the work
  2. the literary style, including suitability for the target audience
  3. the competence and expertise displayed by the author in writing the book and examining the underlying thesis

A panel of judges selected by the National Council of SPCK-A will assess the entries, and the awards will be announced and presented, usually during August. If in the opinion of the judges no entry meets the standards expected, no award is made.

Entries may be submitted at any time up to the 31st March, accompanied by a cheque for $50 per title with four copies of each title submitted to:

Young Christian Writer of the Year

An award for the best entry from a person under 30 years of age for an unpublished manuscript (fiction or nonfiction) with a Christian perspective or theme, which in the opinion of the judges incorporates, explains or encourages Christian life and values. The prize is $2,500.

Entries are judged with an eye to:
  1. the original nature and content of the work
  2. the literary style, including suitability for the target audience
  3. the contribution that the book makes in meeting a need in Christian writing for the Australian situation

If in the opinion of the judges no entry meets the standards expected, no award will be made. Awards are usually announced and presented in August.
